Acute toxicity tests of a textile mill wastewater effluent and a "detergent wash" with a Hermit crab (Climbinarius Africanus) (Aurivillius) OceanDocs
Ajao, E.A..
Bioassay tests were conducted with wastewater effluents from a textile mili and a detergent packing plant using the hermit crab. Clibinarius africanus. (Aurivillus) as experimental animal. LC50 values were evaluated using static testing procedures for 24, 48 and 96 hour. For the textile effluent, means of 79.0, 50.24 and 51.81 percentage effluent by volume were obtained in respect of crabs in the “medium” weight range (0.3 – 0.7grams) for the test periods. For the “detergent wash”, 95.16, 85.00 and 82.33 percentage effluent by volume represented means of values obtained for “small” size crabs (weight range 0.08–0.24 grams) and 96.0, and 81.50 percentage effluent by volume for ‘medium’ size crabs for 24, 48 and 96 hour respectively. Spearman’s Rank...

Degradation of the riparian wetlands in the Lake Victoria basin - Yala swamp case study OceanDocs
Thenya, Thuita; Wassmann, Reiner; Verchot, Louis; Mungai, David.
Land degradation is as a result of broad range of scales and factors, which include biophysical, climatic, demographic and socio-economic. The aim of this paper was to provide an analysis of wetland utilisation, ecosystem degradation and their effect on the Lake Victoria (Kenya) ecosystem. This involved analysis of socioeconomic and remote sensed data. The main sources of wetland degradation in the Lake Victoria basin were identified as (1) farming activities, (2) grazing and macrophyte harvesting and (3) coupled with catchment degradation-deforestation. These factors were closely related to the demographic dynamics and unsustainable land utilisation practices. Socio-economic data provided valuable insight on the pattern of wetland utilisation and possible...

Etude des effets de polluants sur les paramètres hémocytaires de l'huître creuse, Crassostrea gigas - Interactions entre environnement, mécanismes de défense et maladies infectieuses ArchiMer
Gagnaire, Beatrice.
Shellfish industry is mostly realized in estuary zones, which are subjected to pollutions due to anthropic activities. The harmful effects of pollutants on animals inhabiting these estuarine zones are poorly known. Among these animals, Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas, may represent a model because they are sedentary and they filter water intensively. Among all physiological functions possibly disturbed by pollutants, defence mechanisms are poorly studied in bivalves. Moreover, animals presenting impaired defence mechanisms may be more sensitive to infectious diseases. In this context, effects of pollutants on hemocyte functions and on sensitiveness to diseases were tested in C. gigas. After adjusting the protocols for the monitoring of hemocyte...

Experimental systems for the study of bacterial degradation of pollutants from the oil industry. ArchiMer
Wardell, J; Brown, C.
The release of pollutants into the environment, either during normal operations or due to accidental discharges, has focussed attention on the fate and effects of xenobiotic compounds in the marine environment. This interest has been heightened by the development of the off-shore industry with the subsequent discharge of biocides from platforms. This paper describes the results obtained from investigations into the fate of biocides in the marine environment using continuous-culture techniques.

Liver oxidative stress of the grey mullet Mugil cephalus presents seasonal variations in Ennore estuary BJMBR
Padmini,E.; Vijaya Geetha,B.; Usha Rani,M..
The objective of this study was to determine the liver oxidative stress status of grey mullets living in heavy-metal-rich polluted Ennore estuary compared with unpolluted Kovalam estuary. Fish were collected from both estuaries during the monsoon and summer seasons from October 2004 to September 2006. Fish liver homogenate (N = 20 per group) was prepared for evaluating oxidative stress parameters. Fish living in the polluted estuary had significantly higher lipid oxidation products, conjugated dienes (0.346 ± 0.017 vs 0.141 ± 0.012 DA233/mg protein), lipid hydroperoxides (0.752 ± 0.032 vs 0.443 ± 0.03 nmol/mg protein), and lipid peroxides (3.447 ± 0.14vs 1.456 ± 0.096 nmol MDA/mg protein) than those of the unpolluted estuary during the summer. In contrast,...

ROLE OF ENZYMES IN THE REMEDIATION OF POLLUTED ENVIRONMENTS J. Soil Sci. Plant Nutr.
Rao,M.A; Scelza,R; Scotti,R; Gianfreda,L.
Environmental pollution is growing more and more due to the indiscriminate and frequently deliberate release of hazardous, harmful substances. Research efforts have been devoted to develop new, low-cost, low-technology, eco-friendly treatments capable of reducing and even eliminating pollution in the atmosphere, the hydrosphere and soil environments. Among biological agents, enzymes have a great potentiality to effectively transform and detoxify polluting substances because they have been recognized to be able to transform pollutants at a detectable rate and are potentially suitable to restore polluted environments. This brief review will examine some classes of pollutants and enzymes capable of transforming them effectively into innocuous products....

Surveillance du milieu marin et protection santiaire des coquillages ArchiMer
Renault, Tristan.
Shellfish farming is a major economic activity in the European Union, France being one of the main producing countries. Regulations were introduced to meet society's current expectations in terms of food safety at the fishing, farming and harvesting stages, as weil as during processing and marketing. Toxic algae, pathogens or pollutants may contaminate shellfish products during production and harvesting, partly because of the particular environ mental conditions in which these animais are grown. Monitoring programmes were thus deve/oped to detect the presence of biological and chemical contaminants in coastal waters and in shellfish, and to monitor the food safety of the latter.

The status of persistent organic pollutants in Lake Victoria catchment OceanDocs
Madadi, O.V; Wandiga, S. O; Jumba, I. O..
The use of most organochlorine pesticides has been banned or restricted in the republic of Kenya under the Rotterdam and Stockholm convention due to high levels of persistence in the environment and toxicity to nontarget organisms. Studies conducted in some parts of the country have revealed that residue levels of these compounds are still in the environment. However, the residues of these compounds have not been exhaustively studied in the Lake Victoria catchment area. This study was set to investigate the residues levels of p,p-DDT, o,p’- DDE, p,p-DDD, g-HCH, D-HCH, a-HCH, Aldrin, and Dieldrin, in water samples from Lake Victoria catchment. Samples were collected during the short rain, dry and wet seasons and analysed using gas chromatography equipped...
